Ultima Online Will Fix a Significant Number of Bugs

Fish pies not being stackable, mushrooms exploding under your house, and gargoyles activating their stone form mid-flight, are these things boring you? Whatever your answer is, they are not going to happen again, because Ultima Online has a patch for you, and they just got a whole bucket of fixes and updates posted to the test server. In the updates, Lava Lobster fishing has been fixed, hats have stopped twitching, and gargoyle aprons have all been returned to their proper hue.

At long last, golems can no longer be used to exploit combat training, and vendors are seeing some big changes. Rather than increasing their fees once per day, vendors will charge incrementally over time. They’ll also give players a grace period before heading out after running out of funds, and all vending penalties have been abolished. Hit up the official patch notes for the lengthy list, if only so you can learn that “Robin’s Egg candy will no longer fill the tummy of the eater.”

Wanderer’s Valley: Making Chaotic Evil Fun in Age of Wushu

Age of Wushu has spotlighted a new school which is also the first “Evil” school — the Wanderer’s Valley. They do not care about anything, except making the Wushu world collapse. While rooted in secrecy like the Tangmen, Wanderer’s Valley are not dependent on the shadows. They prefer to know that their school instills terror across the world.

Many of the key leaders are fallen members of other sects. A Divinator that discovered he would die an early death founded the school. He knew that living a rich and full life would never happen for him. This knowledge turned him bitter, and the Divinator began recruiting the most infamous members of society to ruin the culture and land that he could never have. He took dark pleasure from watching others suffer as he eventually would. This pleasure in the suffering of others, and the belief that “life is short” is now the battle cry for the Wanderer’s Valley. They believe that they do not need to reveal their motivations, because in the end – it will not matter. The Wanderer’s Valley believes in living in the now, and letting the rest of humanity deal with their consequences. The school’s current leadership in Age of Wushu exemplifies this belief. The leader is a eunuch that wants to cast China straight into chaos, and a man so far removed from the rules – even the Beggar’s sect banished him.

The skills behind the Wanderer’s Valley members are just as fun as the evil they cause. A barehanded skill set called “Bone Corrosion Palm”, uses pressure points and poison energy to cripple others. The “Wind-Catching Blade” uses the strength of the two massive blades to slice through foes with a deadly combination of speed and force. Finally, the “Perish Blade” set is a signature move for the double sting weapon. It uses buffs through points, poisons to weaken an area, and insects to slowly eat away at enemies.

If you just want to see the world burn, then this is the school for you. Do you have what it takes to be the wild card, or is the eunuch more equipped to handle the dangers? For more information, you can visit the Age of Wushu official site.

Vanguard Updates For the Holiday

If I picked up XP boosters for Vanguard from the Station Marketplace recently, I would save them, and I hope you would save them, as well, because Vanguard’s new patch makes a few tweaks to several Marketplace items.

  • The duration of the 25%, 50%, and 100% Bonus XP potions has been increased to 8 hours.
  • Adventurer’s Pack of Knowledge, Crafter’s Satchel of Knowledge, and Diplomat’s Pouch of Knowledge now provide 10% XP gain instead of 5%.
  • New “Greater Knowledge” containers have been added to the Marketplace, each offering 20% XP boost in its designated sphere.
  • Debt Removal Potions should no longer drop individually from Gloriann Lockboxes. There remains a chance for them to be given in addition to another reward.
  • Keep an eye on the Marketplace window throughout the month of December for new mounts and items introduced to celebrate the holidays. Watch the Item of the Day window for great values on these new items, as well as some of our best sellers.

Other changes include the removal of Veteran Lockboxes from city banks to pave the way for future banking changes, Sprint is now usable once every 3 minutes with Improved Sprint set at 1 minute, and a number of quest and item tweaks were also made..

Cryptic Developers Reveal Neverwinter’s Character Customization

Cryptic games have always been known for its powerful character customization tools such as evident in Star Trek Online. Even greater will this ring true for Perfect World and Cryptic’s upcoming Dungeons & Dragons action MMORPG, Neverwinter. Today, I am pleased to reveal the developer journal about Neverwinter’s character customization when a player steps into the Forgotten Realms.

In Neverwinter, character creation begins with choosing a race, class, and gender combo. Each race comes with unique racial abilities, which grants some bonuses to core stats — strength, constitution, and more. These racial abilities allow players to fully customize their play style. Furthermore, stats are also customizable, both through your choice of race and through rolling.

Create a sharp looking avatar with a large scale of options to customize physical appearance. There will be an option to choose from several preset looks or individually fine-tune each facet of your character – slim or lengthen hands, change shape and complexion, add height, show battle scars or tattoos, and much more.

Roundtable: Has The Industry Grown Up?

You might have seen it on Twitter, arguments cast in 140 characters or less. It may have been the sudden, vicious turn of a comment thread or the undertone of dissatisfaction in a headline. You might even have felt like this all along. Things are being challenged, conventions called to account.

Gender imbalance, the lack of inclusivity, the corruption of journalists, issues of maturity, sex and violence, copycatting, the exploitation of the customer – all these issues have been pushed to the fore over the last twelve months. Turned over and inside out, vaunted or ridiculed – there seems to have been barely time to draw breath this year between long, hard looks in the mirror.
For some it’s been a welcome change, the relief of realising that there are other people who feel just as angry, marginalised or outright excluded. For others it’s been an unwelcome distraction, unnecessary navel gazing which only leads to a pointless stirring of the pot and no real progress – frenzies whipped up by the press for cheap hits and self-glorification.
Whatever you feel about them, many have been almost impossible to ignore. Whether it’s the storm of abuse endured by Anita Sarkeesian, the crisis of confidence ignited by Rab Florence or marketing tactics which are somewhere on a scale between condemnable and very clever, this has been a year in which our industry has been pulled from many ruts, asked to reassess and re-examine.
How much has actually changed is debatable, but what is clear is that it’s unlikely we’re going to see these issues swept back under the carpet. Like it or not, these debates aren’t going away. We’ve hosted and participated in all of these discussions, and more, but we rarely get to comment on them directly. So, read on as we ask our international staff – was this the year that gaming grew up?

Guild Wars 2: Lost Shores Player Rewards are Coming

It has announced by ArenaNet that players who joined connectivity issues during last month’s Guild Wars 2 Lost Shores event will receive a participation reward via in-game mail. Devs alsourge players to be patient as the script could take several hours to run.

As we mentioned last week, for those players who were not able to get the rewards for the final Lost Shores event because they were suffering connection issues, we will provide rewards for their participation in the event. Thanks for your patience while we worked to resolve this.We will hand out the rewards via In-game mail today – Quick FYI… it might take several hours to run the script, so do not panic if you do not immediately receive it. ~RB2

In addition, a fan make a Guild Wars 2 “Looking for Group” app which has been released. According to a thread on Reddit, “Arxae” has created a way for players to find groups across servers and to avoid the tiresome spamming of “LFG”.

  • Great way to find a group even across different home servers.
  • No need to stand in Lions Arch spamming chat for a group.
  • Quick way to advertise you are looking for a group.
  • Quick way to pick up that last needed member.

Countdown to Christmas FPS Challenge

SG Interactive and G4Box Inc. have announced a joint project for the holidays: the Countdown to Christmas FPS Challenge. From December 7 until December 26, Cross Fire and Project Blackout players can participate in multiple events to celebrate the season in both games.

For one week, both games’ players can vote for their favorite map and mode – and for each game, the map with the most votes will earn a bonus 100% bonus experience and in-game currency boost during the holiday event.

Starting on December 14, the Countdown to Christmas FPS Challenge really begins, granting players in both games daily holiday challenges, such as landing 12 head-shots or 11 close-range humiliation kills. Each daily will give players a unique reward that includes powerful long and short-range firearms, melee weapon and in-game vanity items.

“The holidays are always a great time of year for our audience and like a Christmas list to Santa Claus, we want to give them a voice in what they get this year,” said Jungsoo Lee, vice president of live development for SG Interactive. “By voting for their favorite map, our gaming community is directly affecting both their holiday gameplay and the development of future landscapes of both games.”

As an additional challenge, players can earn another double experience bonus map simply by recruiting friends to “like” the CrossFire and/or Project Blackout Facebook pages. Running concurrent with the Facebook voting campaign, should either game page secure 3,000 new “likes,” that game will earn a second map with the double experience bonus for the duration of the Countdown to Christmas event.

League of Legends: Changing Bad Player Behavior

League of Legends developer Riot Games has established a new anti-griefer task force it calls the Player Behaviour and Justice Team. It’s job is to stop being being “jerks” online.

In an interview with Gamasutra, League of Legends lead producer Travis George explained that the task force was set up to monitor foul play and griefing as a means of better understanding it, and to devise more effective ways of putting a stop to unscrupulous actions.

He said, “Nobody wants to play a game with somebody who’s mean. There’s a line, and that line generally is people being mean for the sake of being mean – telling you what to do, telling you how bad you are. And I think we can actually fix a lot of that.”

“We actually have built a team around this. We call it, lovingly, the Player Behaviour and Justice Team. There are a lot of really talented folks on that team, including two PhDs. One’s a cognitive neuroscientist and one’s a behavioural psychologist.”

“We’ve actually developed specific trends, and our own set of metrics that we look at for measuring what percentage of times we think that players will encounter a negative experience in a game, and how severe that negative experience is,” says George. “And then we have to build things or be responsive or message the community in a particular way to address those things.”

“This is going to be a major focus for us”.

Hawken’s Open Beta on December 12th

According to Adhesive Games, the open beta of Hawken will start on December 12th when the game will be made available worldwide, and you can try Hawken at that time if you want to. Checking their fuel levels, re-supplying their Tow Launchers and generally priming their engines, Adhesive Games has done all the preparation for the release of their upcoming Mech FPS, Hawken.  Having had a successful few rounds of closed beta testing also boosted the open beta date.

The term “Open Beta” has in recent years has in many cases unofficially marked the actual release of the game, with players able to start progressing without fears of further beta wipes. Hawken’s original release date was set for December 12th and now it seems the official launch will be delayed until early 2013.

The good news is Adhesive Games seems committed to staying in touch with the communities feedback. According to Hawken’s Lead animator Chris Lalli: “Open beta is our chance to implement all the good feedback we’ve gotten from closed beta players on the forums, and deliver the changes the community wants to see.”Hawken is competing with other games in MMOsite Reader’s Choice event.
